gif is best, it allows transparency and animation and isn't as "lossy" as jpg. However, if you want a smaller file size and aren't going to use animations or transparency or use the jpg file to make something else, jpg isn't terrible.

Being your asking a rather basic question, im going to assume your fairly new to creating images... So welcome to the community wink

What program are you using? If your trying to use MS paint.. which I think is what we all TRY to start with...
Try downloading GIMP
http://www.gimp.org/

Theres a 14 day trial on photoshop as well which is a great program... I still use photoshop 7.0 tho and theres so many out there now; im not even sure what one to recomend. There all better then MS paint tho for sure wink

Photoshop CS4 is the industry standard, its what i use cheesy

Oh yeh, and JPG has high quality while GIF can save animations and tranperancy. However for web graphics gif is definitely better.

It really depends on the context of the image, ie, what it contains and it's being used for.

On most websites I develop these days, I tend to use three different standards (GIF, JPEG & PNG) depending on the context of the image.

I prefer JPEG beacuse of the wide acceptance of this format and high quality with low size. Beware you set the compression to 0% or the quality to 100%.

Gif’s are made for solid color images. no gradients etc.

Jpeg’s are made for pictures. Peoples faces, landscapes etc.

so obviously you should be using them for those situations.. the image quality in the gif is considerably poorer than the jpeg.. bc again thats what jpegs are for.
