Security validation for guest posting - Done
Post by miana on May 12th, 2006, 3:20pm

Not sure if this has been suggested yet. It's a security validation code that would be required for guest posting only (like a random set of alphanumeric characters). When they post, the code has to be entered to prove they are not a "robot". Might be one way to prevent these nasty spammers.

Just because a topic is noted doesn't mean it will automatically be added wink, it just means it has more of a chance of being added.

Not sure if what is in place is what was suggested here, but I think the image has to be a lot harder to read. We have recently had an onslaught of guest bots replying to random threads (on both forums I'm an admin of), and I feel like a more difficult image system would help cut this down. I logged out to look at what guests currently have to do, and any robot with the right programming could type the letters and numbers that are displayed.

I've seen the following on a lot of other sites, and I feel like the image on the right might be a bit more secure...

As someone who wrote his masters thesis on computer vision and spent over a year testing its limitations for that thesis, I can assure you our captcha is more than adequate.

Most captcha breaking is done by firms in developing nations where workers a hundred or so an hour for an individual captcha type in order to exhaust the possibilities.

On that same note, a lot of times what folks mistake for bots are actually outsourced human farms in those same developing nations that troll the comment sections of websites and forums to post content various companies and individuals pay for.

These folks post link ridden advertisements on various boards in order to try and generate revenue.

Some examples of this

If your forum is being targeted by these types of people (Often boards with broad focuses covered or obscure interests are) then I would honestly reccomend disabling guest posting.
